TLHP Year 1: How alike are humans and other animals?
Back
This term, the Year 1 learning has been centred around the big question, 'How alike are humans and other animals?' The children have been looking at texts linked to animals and their habitats. We started the term reading Class Two at the Zoo, and the children wrote a recount of their own trip to the zoo. We use our museum learning objects to identify which category the animal belonged to. For example, the children had a yellowhammer, and they could see feathers, a beak and an egg. This allowed the children to place the Yellowhammer into the bird category that lives in bushes and that is why it is Yellow and not brown like the Wren.
We also went to Beale Park where we learnt more about animals and how to care for them. During their workshop, they learnt about which animals we can keep as pets and which animals are not pets. The trip inspired us to write a recount in our books.
Year 1's high stakes project this term was the create a shoe box diorama. Their diorama consist of everything the children have learnt about animals and their habitats this term. They were asked to choose an animal, research their needs and then create a model of the habitat. The children used the skills they learnt in DT to fold, roll and manipulate resources to create a mini version of an animal’s habitat.
